LAUSD Volunteer Application

Fri Sep 08, 2017 2:33 pm by Admin

Art to Grow On volunteers should register with LAUSD. It only takes a couple of minutes to complete the application.

If you plan to work with the kids you also need to get a TB test. The test is covered by most insurance policies. But if yours doesn't, the PTA will pay for the test.

Thanks,

ATGO: How It Works

Fri Sep 08, 2017 2:10 pm by Admin

Every two years, ten projects are selected from submittals by local artists.

Each project is presented at a Docent Workshop, in which the artist teaches the docents (parent-volunteers) how to create, and then how to teach the project to the kids. The Artist also provides a detailed lesson plan.

Three Docent Workshops are held in the fall and two in the winter. Workshops are on Thursday mornings …

Set up and Break Down Tips for New Docents

Thu Sep 07, 2017 5:52 pm by Admin

If it's your first time leading the class, here are some tips for setting up and breaking down.

My number 1 tip is get to school early and be prepared.

Once at school, sign-in to the volunteer book in office. Check the sign-in log for other ATGO volunteers.

In most cases we’ll be teaching in our Tent, but if the weather isn’t cooperative (rain, high wind or heat) consider teaching in …

Docent and Assistant: What Time Should I Arrive at the Tent?

Mon Sep 28, 2015 2:14 pm by Admin

The times listed in the schedule are the times class begins and ends.

Docents should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to class.

I like to arrive 45 minutes early. You’ll find there’s always plenty to do. The actual prep time depends on the complexity of the project, the state of the supplies (how they were put away), and the number and experience of the assistants.

Although I almost …

Make Adult Helpers Feel Welcome!

Wed Sep 23, 2015 9:57 pm by hodgkisb

It's great to have so many new docents and assistants joining us this year! Here are some ways to make sure we continue to recruit new volunteers:

Make sure you introduce yourself to all adult helpers. Thank them for coming. Show that you are happy they came to the tent! Find out how they'd like to be introduced to the children. (e.g. Mrs Smith? Miss Maria?)

if they arrive on time before …

Tips and Tricks for Teaching Kids Art

Thu Sep 17, 2015 4:55 pm by Admin

I’ve only been doing this for a year, so I hope the more experienced docents and assistants will chime in. But here are a few tips that work for me.

  • Study the material in advance- It really goes without saying, but... Don’t get caught teaching a class while reading the lesson plan. Not fun for you or the students.

  • Your Kids as Guinea Pigs- Use your kids as a focus group. Try out your spiel …

How to get your timing right

Wed Sep 23, 2015 7:51 pm by hodgkisb

One of the most difficult aspects of teaching is getting your timing right. It's especially difficult when the class arrives late. Here are some tips to ensure you get everything done in the little time allotted.

1) Know when your class is scheduled to end! We run three different periods, and even after all these years, I often have to remind myself what the end time of each period it.

2) …

"Classroom" management

Wed Sep 23, 2015 7:41 pm by hodgkisb

As much as the kids love ATGO, it's hard to keep the attention of 24-36 students! Here are some "tried and true" techniques:

Keep your "lecture" to a minimum!!! The first couple of times you teach a project, you will almost inevitably run out of time. If you manage to finish "early," you can always add "fun facts," clean up help or a "gallery …
